“How do you do it?” It’s a question I’ve been asked A LOT recently by people both in the CI community and friends who don’t have a chronic illness but have always been so supportive and loving. I’ve been trying to give this question more thought because I really want to have a good answer. I wish I could tell you the unpredictability doesn’t get to me. For example, these pictures were taken within hours of each other on Tuesday. Something that has taken a lot of stress off has been open communication with my professors about my health. I always send them an email giving a brief overview at the beginning of the semester. So when things happen because let’s be real, something ALWAYS happens. I’ve been hospitalized every semester of college… I’ve never had a normal semester. So my short answer is I guess I’m used to it. But you all deserve a better answer than that. I plan. I work my ass off. And when things go wrong, I reach out to my professors and ask for extensions and they’re always willing to work with me due to the open communication and that’s helped me form some amazing bonds with professors. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. I think another thing that drives me is the fact I missed an entire year of high school due to a TBI and watching my friends get to learn how to drive and think about college while I was going to rehab every day was isolating and lonely and my mental health was at an all time low. Having that experience makes me determined to push through. And while you may not have had the same experience as me, I urge you to find something that drives you. Find your support. My friends have gotten me through my day to day and my parents are so amazing and are so supportive and loving. Something the queen herself @christilukasiak said on Tuesday was to stop apologizing. So stop apologizing for your experience. So what you answered that email a little late? I’m guilty of this still but I’m working on it. As I gain more insight into this question, I will update but for now this is the best answer I can find. If you’d like to share your thoughts about this question I’d love to see them!
