So let’s talk concussions and autoimmune diseases. This is from the limited research online so there’s not a ton of data so this could be proven totally wrong!
When a concussion happens, cytokines are released into the brain and blood (they can cross the BBB). The vagus nerve is responsible for mediating inflammation in many parts of the body, most well known is the gut. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is found in the gut and mediated by the vagus nerve. Concussions can cause dysfunction of the vagus nerve. If LPS is released, immunoglobulins can be released in large amounts causing parts of the immune system to attack healthy tissue and thus leading to an autoimmune disorder. It’s also noteworthy that dysfunction of the vagus nerve can lead to gastroparesis. Now, this will only happen in rare cases but is a possibility and would align with when I had the beginning symptoms of Crohn’s and other autoimmune conditions. This is part of the reason my doctors wanted me to have a GES today. I’m waiting on those results but from what the tech said, nothing was moving through and then all of the sudden <90% of those nasty radioactive eggs were through. I have a total tmi story about those eggs 🥴 Highlight of the day: definitely getting to meet @thebehcetsbabe because we had our studies today at the same time. I was so happy I got to meet her as she’s such a kind person and has been so helpful and supportive to me! Anyways hopefully this makes sense and if you have questions or want to shout out a person who’s helped you, feel free to share in the comments!!
